Paris-based photographer Christian Raby has accepted an invitation to come to the University of Chicago for the spring quarter of 2017. He leads a photography project on the daily life of the foreign students and the first-generation immigrant students of the University of Chicago. The project responded to questions such as: Why does a young man from Malaysia come to the University of Chicago to study sociology? What motivates a young woman from Turkey to study gender and sexuality in the Windy City? What prompts a student from Mauritius to pursue degrees in physics and philosophy in Chicago? Other students are born in the United States, but
have parents who come from Nigeria, India, Jamaica, Eretria, Ethiopia, Greece…. How do these students understand their identities as American citizens? How do they feel about having deep roots in two different cultures? How do family immigration stories inform and impact their lives as University of Chicago students?
